Six to Seven babies were born per minute, causing over crowded nurseries and delivery rooms in local hospitals.
What explains the Baby Boom?
Many young couples postponed their dream of starting a family because of the war and present conditions in the states. Once the soldiers arrived home, people saw it as a safer environment and felt comfortable with America's future. A shift in the American economy came next, corporations grew, labor unions provided benefits to help support growing families and consumer goods were very cost-effective. Households begin using this new found lifestyle as a way to give their families the material “wants” they never had. The real estate market also become very affordable and “low-cost mortgage” allowed for the suburbanization of the United States. edit. |
Baby Boom of the 1950's
The late 1940’s and early 1950’s is commonly referred to as the “Baby Boom”, a temporary marked increase in the birth rate, especially the one following World War II. The war had ended on September 2nd, 1945 and almost exactly nine months later America saw a dramatic increase in the number of children being born. “The Cry of the baby was heard across the land” said historian Landon Jones. Between the years of 1946 and 1952 more than 11.1 million babies were born in the Unites States. The Chart expresses the dramatic increase in births between the years of 1948-1960, then the more steady trend after the “Baby Boom”. The world was in a state of joy and happiness.
